Review Eligibility Requirements

You must be in good standing (academic and conduct) at Georgetown University or your home university. To remain in good standing, you must maintain a strong, consistent academic record, meet the academic standards set forth by the University, and exhibit a history of good citizenship and student conduct.

For semester and full year terms abroad: To facilitate the transfer of credit from courses taken abroad back to Georgetown, you must declare all of your intended majors prior to submitting your study abroad application. We also encourage you to declare minors and certificates, but there is flexibility with these.

It is important to remember that all nominations are inherently conditional. A significant decline in academic performance or a disciplinary sanction prior to departure may render you ineligible for study abroad. This is true even if you have already received a nomination from Georgetown or formal acceptance from an overseas institution.

GPA & Academic Performance

The GPA requirement for semester and full-year programs is noted on each program’s brochure page. Summer programs require applicants to be in good academic standing, unless a specific minimum GPA requirement is noted on the program’s brochure page.* Additional program requirements, including specific language requirements or other coursework, may be noted on individual program brochure pages.

You must maintain a strong, consistent academic record and continue to meet the academic standards set forth by the University. You may not study abroad while on academic probation.

*Students with less than a 2.5 GPA are encouraged to strengthen their application by submitting an Eligibility Addendum Form (EAF).

We encourage you to speak with an OGE advisor early in the process to learn about your options for study abroad and to inquire about the EAF (see below) if applicable.

Conduct & Honor Council

Your disciplinary status and disciplinary incidents (related to both academic integrity and conduct) may affect your eligibility to study abroad.

Student Conduct:

• Probation and Suspension:Students are not eligible to participate in a study abroad program while on any active housing or disciplinary probation. Students may not study abroad while on a university suspension.
• Open and Pending cases
  • A student may not study abroad with an open or pending conduct case.
  • It is the student’s responsibility to stay in contact with the Office of Student Conduct, ensure that they participate in any Student Conduct processes in a timely manner, and resolve any resulting sanctions.
  • All sanctions (fines, work hours, assignments, etc) must be completed by the date assigned by the Office of Global Education, even if this entails completing the sanctions prior to the deadline assigned by student conduct.
  • A student may submit an appeal, as outlined in the Code of Conduct. However, the appeal must be resolved before a student may study abroad. A student may not study abroad while sanctions are held “in abeyance”. Such a case would be considered open for the purposes of study abroad.

Honor Council:

• Dismissal – not eligible for study abroad
• Suspension – not eligible for study abroad
• Transcript Notations –
  • Level Two (permanent) – not eligible for study abroad
  • Level One (removable) – may not study abroad for one full semester following the violation. Student must then complete the sanction reduction process, if eligible, in order to become eligible for study abroad.
• Letters of Censure –
  • Level Two (permanent) – may not study abroad for one full semester following the violation. May not have a further violation within that period of time.
  • Level One (removable) – Student may study abroad only if they have begun the sanction reduction process by the end of the semester prior to study abroad.
• Letter of Reprimand – does not affect study abroad eligibility
• Current and pending cases
  • A student may not study abroad with a current or pending Honor Council case.
  • Major term (fall/spring semesters) – A student may not study abroad if they have a new case brought before the Honor Council less than one month prior to the start date of the program OR the start date of the semester at Georgetown, whichever is earliest
  • Short term and summer – A student may not study abroad if they have a new case brought before the Honor Council less than one month prior to the start date of the program.
