Capturing a Place: Student Experiences through #TakeoverTuesdays

As more countries reopen for study abroad, Georgetown students are looking for resources to learn from their peers about the reality of studying abroad during a pandemic. Beyond attending Study Abroad 101 and meeting with an Office of Global Education (OGE) Advisor, OGE is working with students who are currently abroad to share their perspectives through social media takeovers.

Throughout the year, the Office of Global Education highlights the experiences of students abroad by hosting social media takeovers on their official Instagram account @guabroad. During the takeovers, student hosts share a day in the life abroad, including academics, housing, student life, and navigating the local city. They often answer questions from viewers using the “Ask Me A Question” feature on Instagram Story, a great opportunity for students curious about student life at a specific university or site. The takeovers are then uploaded onto the official OGE YouTube page “ GU Office of Global Education” and are also included in the program brochures.

Two recent examples are from the United Kingdom are:

University of Edinburgh

For Fall 2021, Rosy Lin (Col’ 23) is studying abroad at the University of Edinburgh in Scotland. Watch as she takes students on her usual morning routine, a tour of her flat, and answers questions about her favorite things to do in Edinburgh.

The London School of Economics

In this takeover, Deborah Oh (Col ‘23) takes viewers to a number of on-campus facilities, explaining the protocols being followed by The London School of Economics. She introduces viewers to Helena Irvins, the Undergraduate Administrator of the Department of Economic History at LSE who talks about the unique academic opportunities available through their department, one of the only existing Economic History departments at a university in the world.

For students studying abroad for the incoming Spring 2022 semester who are interested in hosting a social media takeover for OGE, please fill out the spring 2022 Takeover Tuesday application form by December 1, 2021. Selected students will be contacted on December 5. We look forward to working with students to document their time abroad.
