Tuition & Financial Aid

Semester/Full Year Tuition

Semester/Full Year Tuition & Program Budgets

If you study abroad for a semester or academic year you will be charged Georgetown tuition instead of the tuition for the individual program. The tuition payment does not cover the additional costs of living abroad, such as transportation, meals, housing, passport/visa fees, insurance, or personal expenses. If you who receive financial aid you are eligible to apply your financial aid toward a semester or academic year study abroad program (with a few exceptions, see the Financial Aid section for details).

We provide budget estimates for each approved program abroad, which include the total amount billed by GU as well as an estimate for additional costs incurred. To view an individual Program Budget, click the button below to navigate to myGUABROAD and select your program. On the program brochure, go to the Finances & Funding tab and click the Program Budget.

1. Tuition costs for Semester and Full Year programs:

A comprehensive budget sheet that includes our estimates for these additional items, as well as the total estimated cost of each program, can be found on each individual program webpage.

2. Housing fees:

Payment of housing fees will depend upon the program you choose. In some cases, our partners require that students pay fees directly to the housing provider or host university, while others prefer to bill Georgetown directly.

  • If you are required to pay fees directly to the host institution, you will not see a housing fee listed on the GU bill. We will, however, provide an estimate of these charges so that you can budget accordingly.
  • If your housing fee is billed to Georgetown by the program sponsor, this charge will be reflected on the GU bill. This fee will be listed in addition to tuition on the program budget sheet.
  • If you participate in a GU-administered program (e.g., Georgetown in Fiesole, Italy – Villa Le Balze, Georgetown in Doha, Qatar) you will pay housing fees directly to Georgetown.

Regardless of how the housing payment is made, you will receive a program budget sheet that will indicate the program’s housing charges and how they should be paid.

3. Estimates for incidentals:

To assist you in getting a sense of the true cost of study abroad, our program budget sheets will include an estimate of expenses for incidentals. We will give estimates for items such as:

  • Transportation costs
  • Books
  • Meals & entertainment
  • Visa fees
  • Round-trip airfare
  • Personal expenses (toiletries, immunizations, health insurance required by the host country, cell phone, etc.)

These estimated costs will not be reflected on the GU bill, but should be taken into consideration when evaluating the cost of a program. If you receive financial aid, these costs will be factored into the your financial aid package.

Summer Tuition

Summer Tuition

If you study abroad on an OGE Summer Program you will be charged a set Program Fee. In general, program fees include tuition, academic fees, housing, and excursions. Program fees can vary greatly due to the different lengths of programs and the amount of credit awarded. We provide tuition and fee information for Summer Programs on each program’s online brochure. You should consult your specific program brochure for fee information.

To view the program fee for a specific program, click the button below to navigate to myGUABROAD, select the program from the list and navigate to the Finances and Funding tab of the Program Brochure.

Financial Aid

Financial Aid

Semester/Full Year Financial Aid

All forms of financial aid (with the exception of federal work-study funds) can be applied to Georgetown-approved and Independent Petition programs. This includes Georgetown grants, loans, scholarships, and state and federal awards, such as Pell Grants and Guaranteed Student Loans. A financial aid package for a student participating on a Georgetown-Approved program will be based on the specific costs of the program.. In cases where work-study funds are not available, or where the cost of living at the semester or full-year study site exceeds that of the GU main campus, the financial aid package will be revised to cover the additional funds needed for room and board, as well as transportation and other personal expenses. The following expenses will be included when calculating a student’s financial need: tuition and fees, room and board, books, airfare, and miscellaneous expenses (such as toiletries, limited entertainment, local transportation, immunizations and any health insurance required by the host country). Normal procedures and deadlines for filing financial aid applications apply.  You can access the estimated program budget for each program here.

You are encouraged to speak with your financial aid counselor to discuss any questions that may arise.

Summer Financial Aid

Georgetown has need-based financial aid funding for undergraduates who enroll in a minimum of 6 credits over the summer term. This includes credits issued from OGE-administered study abroad programs. Summer financial aid awards can be applied to housing, meals, travel and personal expenses associated with your program.

In order to apply, you must complete the Georgetown “Summer Plans Survey” in GU Experience, and OSFS will begin awarding completed summer surveys starting in mid-February.

More information on how to receive financial aid for the summer term is available on the Office of Student Financial Services’s undergraduate summer financial aid page . You should consult with your financial aid counselor with any questions.

How are the costs billed for Independent Petition Programs?

If you participate in an Independent Petition program the Office of Student Accounts will bill you for Georgetown tuition and the Education Abroad Insurance Plan. You will also be responsible for submitting a program budget to your OGE Advisor so that, in conjunction with the Office of Student Financial Services, Georgetown University can arrange for the disbursement of Georgetown, federal, and state aid. You must meet with your OGE Advisor to review your program budget sheet and to discuss which charges will be billed to your Georgetown accounts and which will be paid directly to the host institution or program provider. In some cases, additional fees such as housing may not be billed until after the normal payment period when OGE has received the bill from the provider or host university.

What is Georgetown’s refund policy for study abroad?

You must notify the Office of Global Education in writing if you opt to withdraw from a study abroad program.

Refund policy for semester and full-year programs:

If you withdraw a nomination to a semester or full-year program prior to the beginning of your program and after accepting placement by signing the Program Acceptance Form, you will be assessed a placement and processing fee of $300 and will be responsible for any non-recoverable program expenses that Georgetown University, the host university, or the program provider incur on your behalf.

If you withdraw from study abroad  after the program’s start date you will be issued a refund that is calculated from the date the Office of Global Education is notified in writing of your cancellation. Tuition refunds will be calculated in accordance with the Main Campus tuition refund periods listed in the Undergraduate Bulletin. The Office of Global Education will refund 100% of recoverable costs. No refunds will be given for non-recoverable expenses and the Education Abroad Insurance fee. Georgetown University and the Office of Global Education are not responsible for indirect costs paid directly by the student, including but not limited to: passport fees, vaccinations, and transportation costs.

If you do not accept your nomination and decide to defer your study abroad experience until the next semester, you will not be charged the placement and processing fee. If, however, you do not end up studying abroad during the next semester, you will be assessed the $300 placement and processing fee.

Refund policy for political evacuation and natural disasters:

An exception to the Georgetown refund/withdrawal policy is made when the Office of Global Education declares that a “crisis” exists and will affect a study abroad program. Please reference the Undergraduate Bulletin for the full text of this policy.

Refund policy for cancellation of programs:

Georgetown University reserves the right to cancel programs without prior notification; however, every effort will be made to provide participants with information on cancellations in a timely manner.

Please note: The Director of the Office of Global Education has discretion to waive fees in the case of student illness, family emergency, poor academic performance, failure to complete language requirements or any other case where a waiver is determined to be appropriate.

How do I access surplus financial aid funds?

Depending on your financial aid package, you may have surplus financial aid after paying your GU bill. If that is the case, you can request these funds to help cover additional costs incurred abroad. To request a refund, login to GU Experience to place an official request. Instructions for requesting a refund are found on the Office of Student Account’s website.

For a refund to be disbursed, the Office of Student Accounts must confirm that a surplus exists. This normally does not occur until after the add/drop period on campus: late September (full-year and fall-only participants) or late January (spring-only participants). Therefore, you should be aware that you will not be able to access these funds before the specified dates. You are strongly encouraged to speak with your Financial Aid Counselor early in the process if you have concerns about financial aid coverage disbursement.
